Twelve years of maturation, three exceptional cask influences and over 400 years of Irish whiskey making heritage. Bushmills 12 Year Old is a beautifully rich expression of everything that makes Irish single malt so enjoyable. Situated on the rugged north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, the Old Bushmills Distillery is one of the most historic names in the world of whiskey.
Its story dates back to 1608, when a licence to distil whiskey was granted in the area, giving Bushmills its celebrated association with the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery. More than four centuries later, Bushmills continues to champion the traditions that made Irish whiskey famous, particularly its commitment to triple distillation and the production of exceptionally smooth, fruit-forward single malts.
Bushmills 12 Year Old is a wonderful example of that philosophy, combining the elegance of traditional Irish single malt with the additional richness and complexity of a distinctive three cask maturation process. Three Casks. One Beautifully Balanced Whiskey. What makes Bushmills 12 Year Old particularly interesting is its carefully considered maturation.
Distilled three times from 100% malted barley, the whiskey initially spends at least 11 years maturing in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry casks. The bourbon barrels contribute soft vanilla, honey and gentle oak sweetness, while the Oloroso sherry casks introduce richer notes of dried fruit, warming spice and nuttiness.
But Bushmills doesn't stop there. The matured whiskeys are brought together before undergoing a final six to nine months of finishing in Marsala wine casks. Marsala is a fortified wine from Sicily, renowned for its rich, complex character and flavours of dried fruit, caramel and nuts. This additional maturation introduces another dimension to the whiskey, enhancing its fruitiness and adding a distinctive richness without overwhelming the smooth, elegant spirit at its heart.
The result is a beautifully approachable single malt that manages to be both sophisticated and wonderfully easy to enjoy. Tasting Notes Appearance: Deep amber with warm golden highlights. Nose: Elegant and inviting, with delicate floral aromas accompanied by ripe pear, pineapple and sweet malt. Hints of dried fruit and gentle oak spice add complexity.
Palate: Smooth, rounded and beautifully balanced. Rich dark chocolate combines with dried fruits, caramelised hazelnuts and sweet malt. The Marsala cask influence introduces additional layers of fruit sweetness and nuttiness, complemented by subtle vanilla and warming spice. Finish: Warm and satisfying, with lingering dried fruit, toasted nuts and a gentle sweetness that gradually gives way to soft oak.
